To answer your question as to why vi is with lowercase, it is because lowercase letters are used for ‘minor third-based chords’ and capitals for major third-based chords and in just a moment, you will learn a very important table which tells you which chord type is to be played with which degree of the major scale.

By using a number template, you simply need to remember ‘one thing’ (the template) and you apply that ‘thing’ (the template) to any key you wish. In the previous pages, the chord types were described in number form: the m7 chord, for example, is given as 1, b3, 5, d7.
